I am not the typical pageant girl.

Fun fact about you

I can speak Spanish, English, and Portuguese.

My mission as Miss Earth 2019 is to amplify the voice of the Earth. To encourage the urgency of action needed to reverse the damage we are causing.

PageantLIVE Spotlight on Roxie Baeyens, Miss Earth Philippines 2020

Roxie Baeyens: The Portrait of a Super Hero Woman Who Only Wants to Help Change the World with her Crown

Many times, I do preliminary interviews with International Titleholders from the Top Tier Pageants. I am always amazed at their passion and drive for positive change and their willingness to go that extra 1000 miles to make that change happen. So it was that I was similarly amazed when I sat down for a quick preview interview of Roxie Baeyens.

Are you ready for Miss Earth?

Carousel Productions recently confirmed that preparations are underway for the 20th edition of the advocacy-driven pageant. Although it would not be the traditional coronation event pageants fans would expect, this year’s search would nonetheless take advantage of technology to bring the world together to promote its environmental campaign.

Beauty For A Cause: Miss Earth 2017, Karen Ibasco

On November 3rd, Karen Ibasco, Miss Earth 2017, will crown her successor. Despite her success - she is humble, kind, light-hearted... and she still loves watching cartoons. Yes, fascinating! She's one of us, isn’t she? When it comes to fame, she says, "I am not the type who runs after fame. I know if you act on what you are called for, people will start noticing your heart and sincerity for what you do."

Karen loves travelling and seeing the beauty of nature around her; experiencing a variety of cultures, food, and lifestyle. She believes that a woman who loves to travel is one of the qualities of every Miss Earth winner. Outside the glamorous life of pageantry, she is a health enthusiast. "I'm the kind of person that doesn't need to be dragged into the gym just to workout. Exercising is a part of my lifestyle." She further added, "I am also an art enthusiast. Few people know that I was supposed to take up fine arts in college, but even though I didn’t pursue that career, I still have that passion in me and pursue different short courses in art and design.”

As Miss Earth 2017

Karen got involved in pageants because she envisioned pageantry as a platform and an avenue of disseminating a worthy message to capture the attention of the people around her. When it comes to her mission as Miss Earth 2017, "In connection to how I got involved in the world of pageantry, it's using my profession to be a credible advocate of sharing an environmental message to all people as I maximize my platform of being Miss Earth."

On Environmental Issues: Technology and Developments vs. Environmental Protection and Awareness

PageantLIVE (PL): Social media especially Instagram is very influential to millennials and Gen Z, how do you incorporate the Miss Earth advocacy through them, so they would have a better understanding as to why we need to "Act Now" when it comes to having a sustainable future?

Karen Ibasco (KI): Social media is one of the most essential tools of this generation and a lot of people including me are more inclined to using Instagram since I can post a caption with an inspiring photo of how a small environmental act goes a long way. I believe it's being creative on how you will make it interesting for the millennials, how spreading more awareness is important in doable ways, and how they can act on it by posting photos and videos. I personally do it, and on Miss Earth activities I am involved in and also sharing environmental groups and movements they can join in.

PL: There is an alarming increase of developers who are eyeing on building infrastructures, such as housing and industrial developments in wildlife areas, just because it sounds like an "exotic place," how are we able to press the issue that the ecological effect of these virgin forests is crucial to wildlife survival? It's negative impact on mankind's health survival?

KI: It's very essential that people understand the balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability. I understand that the developers want to grow their businesses, but it should not compromise the ecological balance. There are things meant to go about the way it was originally created. It's not a wrong vision of wanting people to experience nature but risking the preservation of that place is non-negotiable.

Honestly speaking, people are undisciplined that cause all the damages. These wildlife areas are where biodiversity can be found which is essential to the ecological balance. They are also crucial for the wildlife and for humanity’s quality of life and survival. Trees have vital roles in the ecosystem. They act as a carbon sink, source of food, habitat of animals, etc. What will the future be if trees can no longer be found and are replaced by infrastructure everywhere? Climate change will surely worsen in ways unimaginable that are a threat not just to properties, agriculture but to our own lives as well.

Defining Beauty and Women Empowerment

"For me, beauty is not just about the beautiful facade that people see or the unfading beauty of the inside, it's about the balance of both and having a sincere heart for what you do that radiates and resulting to empowering and inspiring not just yourself but also the people around you."

"Women empowerment is seeing a woman with a distinct role in the community that can't be lived without."

To end the interview, we asked Karen for something she can’t live without? She genuinely answered, "I can't live without having my devotion or quiet time with the Lord every morning. It is what equips me every day as I take time to read God's Word."

Karen Ibasco is a perfect definition of beauty, earth goddess and an eco-warrior with a pure heart. She is Miss Earth 2017.

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: Amber Dawn Butler, Miss Maryland Earth United States 2018

Amber Dawn Butler, Miss Maryland Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

Most people don't know that I am an actress and model and can do a perfect imitation of Elmo!

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is Ocean Sustainability. At six years old I saw a killer whale at SeaWorld and was plastered to the glass for an hour. I've been hooked on the ocean since that moment. I finished my graduate degree in Marine Ecosystems & Policy and now teach middle school science and volunteer for mentorship and STEM programs. Beach cleanups are my absolute favorite. I'm not afraid to throw on a wetsuit and dive right in, literally, to clean up our environment.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am looking forward to showing the judges my bold fashion choices that I have made! I can't wait for them to see my swimwear and gown. My swimwear is very practical and is something I would actually wear to work in and clean up our oceans. Be sure to get tickets to the pageant so you can see it too!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

I can't live without lip balm or lipgloss. I must have hydrated, healthy lips at all times!

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: Ashley Smith, Elite Miss West Coast Earth United States 2018

Ashley Smith, Elite Miss West Coast Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

I enjoy Trick Riding on horses! I have a really good and natural connection to horses, which is probably why I feel confident doing stunts on them. I love to creatively express myself on them. My favorite show to watch people do all sorts of stunts and especially Trick Riding is "Cavalia." It's so beautiful, inspiring and spirit lifting - how they tell a story between man and horse!

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is "Freezing Forest Fires," I believe if we can mitigate climate change, we can reduce wildfire risks and reduce carbon emissions; climate change is playing a role in longer, hotter fire seasons, causing larger wildfires.

My advocacy, with the help of social media and public appearance, is to shed light on our environment and Wildland Firefighters. As a former Wildland Firefighter, I know the heavy risk that Wildland Firefighters put their lives through to save the people, homes and our environment.

Unfortunately, there is not enough governmental support in medical and mental health rehabilitation for WFF. Due to PTSD, there is an increasing number of suicides in the WFF community and they need our support, as they protect us and our environment.

What are you looking forward to at Elite Miss Earth United States?

I am really looking forward to meeting the delegates! I really want to be present and just enjoy the process, and all of the fun environmental activities, because I know how fast pageants fly, and the best memories come from experiences, you are most present in.

What is something you can't live without and why?

Well aside from God, I really can't live without my phone. I know it's sad but it's the truth. I literally feel like I am stuck stranded in the middle of nowhere without it. I think this is a reality of a lot of people today. It's sad and kind of funny at the same time.

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: Amorelle Upton, Teen Miss North Dakota Earth United States 2018

Amorelle Upton, Teen Miss North Dakota Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

One fun fact about me is that my parents have always pushed me to be my best from early on, so much so that I was walking and talking in about 9 months.

Tell us about your platform.

My platform focuses on two things that humans would have difficulty surviving without and that our environment would fail without.

My motto is "Plant the trees, Save the bees." As many people could guess, the trees in our forests, backyards, school courtyards, and businesses actually have a purpose. They provide oxygen for us to breathe, make our air cooler than it normally would be, and multiple other important purposes.

However, if we continue to see deforestation occur and not rebuild it or save it, our lives could change tremendously. The same situation would happen with the bees, if we don’t conserve them, our main source of pollination is gone and our food sources are greatly harmed.

What are you looking forward to at Teen Miss Earth United States?

I’m most looking forward to meeting all the girls and getting to make memories with them. This is an opportunity that I will remember forever and am so grateful for.

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Something I can’t live without is music. No matter what mood I am in, whether it be mad, stressed, happy, sad, music will always cool me down or put me in an even better mood.

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: Taylor Burk, Miss Nevada Earth United States 2018

Taylor Burk, Miss Nevada Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

One fun fact about me is that I write in the horror genre.

Tell us about your platform.

As Miss Nevada Earth my platform is H.E.M.P- Helping Educate Misinformed People. Thomas Jefferson stated, "Hemp is the first necessity to the wealth and protection of our country" and I agree.

Hemp is the only plant that can feed us, house us, clothe us, and heal us. It is an immensely profitable crop that could provide a huge boost to the local economy, to the job sector, and to the health of the U.S citizens. After laws farming hemp have recently been lifted, the United States will now have the opportunity to make over 50,000 eco-friendly hemp products that are free from destructive protocol to our planet. Replacing synthetics with hemp alternatives will be the end of a destructive era as hemp can be plastic, paper, clothing, rope made of the most durable fiber on the planet, industrial material to build houses, the protein with the highest omegas, natural healing medication, makeup and even biofuel for hemp cars!

"I don't know if hemp is going to save the world, but it's the only thing that can." -Jack Herer

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I realized that all things ying and yang, pleasure and pain all serve a purpose in a healthy universe and ecosystem. Everything in my life- every insult, wound, struggle, heartbreak, joy, miracle, smile and good vibe ever thought has led and prepared me for this moment.

I am going to be fully present and enjoy it! I look forward to celebrating my personal growth.

What is something you can’t live without and why?

I can not live without books. Books give us the opportunity to plunge deeper into life. It is a gift we can open again and again and always find something new.

One fun fact about you:

I love to bake! Especially cupcakes! Cupcakes to me are like a mini canvas, simple and elegant, and of course so yummy to eat!!

Tell us about your platform.

I actually have 2 platforms.

Before being Miss Minnesota Earth 2018, I shared about the dangers of drinking and driving, and the story of Drake Bigler with his parents' permission of course.

After becoming Miss MN Earth 2018, I partnered with my local Cans for Kids organization to help collect cans to donate to our local recycling center for a donation which goes to community activities such as adult bingo prizes at the nursing home, Easter Eggs hunts, mission trips and fun things like that - locally in our community.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

Honestly, I’m looking forward to the experience! I can’t wait to visit DC and learn and see the history there. Meeting all the national staff and other State delegates are easily at the top of my list also!

I am so excited!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Aside from the essentials of my faith, family, friends, pets, oxygen, water, etc. I cannot live without blankets! Seriously! I am ALWAYS cold! I think I have at least 30 blankets in our house (of 2 people & pets)! Oops!

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: April Maroshick, Miss New York Earth United States 2018

April Maroshick, Miss New York Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

I feel as though I have a mental reference book. I can recite the alphabet backwards, the States in alphabetical order, all of the State capitals, point out every State on a map and just random fun things like that!

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is based around Holistic health. Although I work in internal medicine, I think it’s really important that the patients I work with transition from traditional to alternative medicine.

In my opinion and experience, nothing heals better than the earth's natural resources. Nothing also feels better than feeling in control of your physical and mental health by having alternative medicine at your fingertips.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

Well for starters, Washington D.C. is my favorite American city. I always feel an extra sense of patriotism when exploring there. It’s also a patriotic time of year. I think most importantly though, being able to showcase who I am and what I have to offer the Miss Earth Organization is the most thrilling.

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Aside from the obvious, like God, family, oxygen, and food... I can’t live without books. I have learned most of what I know through reading. Reading is such an incredibly useful source to gain knowledge, perspective and broaden your horizons on just about anything.

To me, the library is the entire world condensed into words on paper right at my fingertips.

One fun fact about you:

I have played soccer since I was five years old and now I am playing it at a collegiate level.

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is “Plant the seeds, Save the Trees.”

I focus on replenishing the trees in the environment because while trees give us many important resources like paper for books and lumber for homes, it is so important to make sure we put back what we take.

I not only want to plant tree seedlings, but I want to plant seeds of encouragement in people about environmental issues. I hope that those people will then plant seeds of encouragement in people that they meet, and we will have hundreds of new Earth warriors!

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am looking forward to the evening gown competition at Miss Earth United States because you get to see the personality of each delegate shine through their evening gown selection. Also, I am looking forward to the public speaking portion because I love hearing what other delegates are passionate about.

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: Merrick Randy Alexander, Miss Nebraska Earth United States 2018

Merrick Randy Alexander, Miss Nebraska Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

I started singing when I was 3-years-old and fell in love with the world of music.

Tell us about your platform.

First of all, my advocacy is to preserve and protect Earth by reducing and removing plastic waste.

Earth is truly a gift and has been taken advantage of for hundreds of years. It is up to us now to work on changing our behavior and working to cleanse the Earth of garbage and damage. These changes will not happen overnight, but the more awareness we spread about recycling, picking up trash, reusable straws, bags, and cups, plant diversity, and etc... we can begin to cause multiple ripples and then hopefully a wave of change. Let’s be the difference our Earth needs and the people of Earth need.

My personal platform is “You Define You.” I came up with this movement to teach men and women all over the world that their circumstances do not have to define them.

This is a movement to become extraordinary. We need to dare to dream bigger than we have ever dreamt before, and have the courage to pursue those dreams. We can break out of whatever box we are placed into, either by ourselves or by others, and become the incredible person we are meant to be. It begins with believing in yourself, and recognizing that you are capable of achieving whatever it is that your heart desires. Make the changes necessary and chase after your dreams and goals. Believe in yourself: I believe in you.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am honestly most excited about the experience itself. It's not every day you get to compete on a National stage and meet extraordinary women from all over the country! I am also extremely honored and excited to sing as a part of the production at MEUS!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

I could not possibly survive without my family. I could be the richest, most famous, and successful person on earth, but without my family, it would be like I had nothing. They support me, encourage me, and most importantly love me unconditionally. I know the question is what thing I couldn't live without, so I guess I would say "love." Family is true love.

Isabella Bennett, Miss New England Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

I was personally trained by Vice President Al Gore as a member of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps.

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is called “Educate to Advocate” and focuses on creating meaningful conversations on the impact we are having on our planet, in order to inspire people to action.

I believe that the best way to advocate for our environment is by enabling others, to become informed citizens, as a result of expanding their understanding of the threats and challenges that earth’s delicate ecosystems are facing, and why these issues matter.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am looking forward to the public speaking portion of the pageant. This is my favorite aspect of the competition and I am excited to share what I have been working on with everyone!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Downtime. In today’s society, it is easy to become consumed by our work or the things we want to accomplish; I think it’s important to find a work-life balance and to make time to relax or decompress each day.

One fun fact about you:

I am super involved in school between color guard/winter guard and environmental clubs.

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is saving our oceans from waste and pollution.

Living so close to the beach and Chesapeake Bay I have been fortunate to work with such active environmental organizations such as the Surfrider Foundation, Better Beach Project and Lynnhaven River Now.

I have even been able to create a bunch of my own cleanups. Other than cleanups, I have been visiting Environmental Centers, such as the Brock Environmental Center, where I was able to educate others on the importance of keeping our waterways clean. At their showing of the Straws Documentary, I was able to bond with others who share my passion on stopping the use of plastic straws.

Right now, as humans, we are the number one predators towards our planet, and education whether at Environmental Centers, beach cleanups, school gatherings or just being out in public is the key to keeping our waterways clean and improving our environment.

What are you looking forward to at Teen Miss Earth United States?

Definitely just getting to know everyone at a better level for a whole week, as well as watching my sister queens compete!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Definitely my friends, family, and mission work. These are people that have had such a great impact on my life. We have been able to support each other and appreciate what we want to accomplish in life.

With mission work, I have been able to see how people that are not in the best living conditions and still live life the best way they can. I have honestly come to see that they enjoy and appreciate so much more than we do.
