In a world of 193 countries, seven continents and five oceans there are few commonalities we all can share-the health of our people, the importance of family and the resilience to survive in our current environment.
As an American in a host country where the people are my family, it has been especially hard to see the detrimental impact made to every person's life here. However I'm in awe of the kindness, and generosity people here have shown to everyone in all walks of life.
In a world where we are connected in multiple networks, we now rely on them since physical closeness is no longer possible but essential to our survival.
I am proud to be a health care provider for the US Navy but also to the Sicilians and Italians in Italy. In a nation which cherishes family, food and religion they are paramount in our shelter at-home lives.
I know many countries including my home are looking at Italy as a learning experience on what to do, what it means to see this virus slow down and know there is a light at the end of this tunnel.
To the countless doctors, nurses, first responders and patients who given their heart, energy, life to saving others I salute you and thank you for your service.
