PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: Amber Dawn Butler, Miss Maryland Earth United States 2018

Amber Dawn Butler, Miss Maryland Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

Most people don't know that I am an actress and model and can do a perfect imitation of Elmo!

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is Ocean Sustainability. At six years old I saw a killer whale at SeaWorld and was plastered to the glass for an hour. I've been hooked on the ocean since that moment. I finished my graduate degree in Marine Ecosystems & Policy and now teach middle school science and volunteer for mentorship and STEM programs. Beach cleanups are my absolute favorite. I'm not afraid to throw on a wetsuit and dive right in, literally, to clean up our environment.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am looking forward to showing the judges my bold fashion choices that I have made! I can't wait for them to see my swimwear and gown. My swimwear is very practical and is something I would actually wear to work in and clean up our oceans. Be sure to get tickets to the pageant so you can see it too!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

I can't live without lip balm or lipgloss. I must have hydrated, healthy lips at all times!

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Highlight: Taylor Burk, Miss Nevada Earth United States 2018

Taylor Burk, Miss Nevada Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

One fun fact about me is that I write in the horror genre.

Tell us about your platform.

As Miss Nevada Earth my platform is H.E.M.P- Helping Educate Misinformed People. Thomas Jefferson stated, "Hemp is the first necessity to the wealth and protection of our country" and I agree.

Hemp is the only plant that can feed us, house us, clothe us, and heal us. It is an immensely profitable crop that could provide a huge boost to the local economy, to the job sector, and to the health of the U.S citizens. After laws farming hemp have recently been lifted, the United States will now have the opportunity to make over 50,000 eco-friendly hemp products that are free from destructive protocol to our planet. Replacing synthetics with hemp alternatives will be the end of a destructive era as hemp can be plastic, paper, clothing, rope made of the most durable fiber on the planet, industrial material to build houses, the protein with the highest omegas, natural healing medication, makeup and even biofuel for hemp cars!

"I don't know if hemp is going to save the world, but it's the only thing that can." -Jack Herer

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I realized that all things ying and yang, pleasure and pain all serve a purpose in a healthy universe and ecosystem. Everything in my life- every insult, wound, struggle, heartbreak, joy, miracle, smile and good vibe ever thought has led and prepared me for this moment.

I am going to be fully present and enjoy it! I look forward to celebrating my personal growth.

What is something you can’t live without and why?

I can not live without books. Books give us the opportunity to plunge deeper into life. It is a gift we can open again and again and always find something new.

One fun fact about you:

I love to bake! Especially cupcakes! Cupcakes to me are like a mini canvas, simple and elegant, and of course so yummy to eat!!

Tell us about your platform.

I actually have 2 platforms.

Before being Miss Minnesota Earth 2018, I shared about the dangers of drinking and driving, and the story of Drake Bigler with his parents' permission of course.

After becoming Miss MN Earth 2018, I partnered with my local Cans for Kids organization to help collect cans to donate to our local recycling center for a donation which goes to community activities such as adult bingo prizes at the nursing home, Easter Eggs hunts, mission trips and fun things like that - locally in our community.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

Honestly, I’m looking forward to the experience! I can’t wait to visit DC and learn and see the history there. Meeting all the national staff and other State delegates are easily at the top of my list also!

I am so excited!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Aside from the essentials of my faith, family, friends, pets, oxygen, water, etc. I cannot live without blankets! Seriously! I am ALWAYS cold! I think I have at least 30 blankets in our house (of 2 people & pets)! Oops!

April Maroshick, Miss New York Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

I feel as though I have a mental reference book. I can recite the alphabet backwards, the States in alphabetical order, all of the State capitals, point out every State on a map and just random fun things like that!

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is based around Holistic health. Although I work in internal medicine, I think it’s really important that the patients I work with transition from traditional to alternative medicine.

In my opinion and experience, nothing heals better than the earth's natural resources. Nothing also feels better than feeling in control of your physical and mental health by having alternative medicine at your fingertips.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

Well for starters, Washington D.C. is my favorite American city. I always feel an extra sense of patriotism when exploring there. It’s also a patriotic time of year. I think most importantly though, being able to showcase who I am and what I have to offer the Miss Earth Organization is the most thrilling.

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Aside from the obvious, like God, family, oxygen, and food... I can’t live without books. I have learned most of what I know through reading. Reading is such an incredibly useful source to gain knowledge, perspective and broaden your horizons on just about anything.

To me, the library is the entire world condensed into words on paper right at my fingertips.

One fun fact about you:

I have played soccer since I was five years old and now I am playing it at a collegiate level.

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is “Plant the seeds, Save the Trees.”

I focus on replenishing the trees in the environment because while trees give us many important resources like paper for books and lumber for homes, it is so important to make sure we put back what we take.

I not only want to plant tree seedlings, but I want to plant seeds of encouragement in people about environmental issues. I hope that those people will then plant seeds of encouragement in people that they meet, and we will have hundreds of new Earth warriors!

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am looking forward to the evening gown competition at Miss Earth United States because you get to see the personality of each delegate shine through their evening gown selection. Also, I am looking forward to the public speaking portion because I love hearing what other delegates are passionate about.

Jody Marie Scimone, Elite Miss Nevada Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

I eat a tremendous amount of fruits. About 80% of what I consume comes from fruits. Eating fruit has helped me heal my body and it is the original fast food. Living in Las Vegas, fruits are a necessity because they keep you hydrated and energized. Eating in season is always the best!

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is a combination of three components. Inspiring others to "Reduce Waste, Go Vegan and Support Locals." I know that if everyone implemented one aspect of these three topics, we would see a drastic shift in our world:

Example 1. If 1 million people stopped using plastic straws, that would save over 5 million plastic straws from polluting our environment.

Example 2. Every day a vegan saves 1,100 gallons of water, 20lbs co2 equivalent, 300 sqft of forested land, 45 lbs of grain, and the life of one animal.

Example 3. If everyone shopped local, their community would shift to a destination and save resources.

What are you looking forward to at Elite Miss Earth United States?

There are so many things I am looking forward to at Miss Earth United States but I am most excited about meeting my sister queens and directors/staff. Being able to talk with them over the phone and social media has been so exciting. Being surrounded by empowered women empowers me.

I love that everyone in the Miss Earth Organization is about saving our Mother Earth because that is something I am so passionate about.

Pageantry is a true sisterhood and I am thankful to be a part of it.

What is something you can't live without and why?

One thing I cannot live without is Love. Without love, our world is nothing. Love and compassion are the fundamental elements of human nature yet it is something people tend to forget. When you love what you do and you do what you love, life is amazing!

Merrick Randy Alexander, Miss Nebraska Earth United States 2018

One fun fact about you:

I started singing when I was 3-years-old and fell in love with the world of music.

Tell us about your platform.

First of all, my advocacy is to preserve and protect Earth by reducing and removing plastic waste.

Earth is truly a gift and has been taken advantage of for hundreds of years. It is up to us now to work on changing our behavior and working to cleanse the Earth of garbage and damage. These changes will not happen overnight, but the more awareness we spread about recycling, picking up trash, reusable straws, bags, and cups, plant diversity, and etc... we can begin to cause multiple ripples and then hopefully a wave of change. Let’s be the difference our Earth needs and the people of Earth need.

My personal platform is “You Define You.” I came up with this movement to teach men and women all over the world that their circumstances do not have to define them.

This is a movement to become extraordinary. We need to dare to dream bigger than we have ever dreamt before, and have the courage to pursue those dreams. We can break out of whatever box we are placed into, either by ourselves or by others, and become the incredible person we are meant to be. It begins with believing in yourself, and recognizing that you are capable of achieving whatever it is that your heart desires. Make the changes necessary and chase after your dreams and goals. Believe in yourself: I believe in you.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am honestly most excited about the experience itself. It's not every day you get to compete on a National stage and meet extraordinary women from all over the country! I am also extremely honored and excited to sing as a part of the production at MEUS!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

I could not possibly survive without my family. I could be the richest, most famous, and successful person on earth, but without my family, it would be like I had nothing. They support me, encourage me, and most importantly love me unconditionally. I know the question is what thing I couldn't live without, so I guess I would say "love." Family is true love.

One fun fact about you:

I was personally trained by Vice President Al Gore as a member of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps.

Tell us about your platform.

My platform is called “Educate to Advocate” and focuses on creating meaningful conversations on the impact we are having on our planet, in order to inspire people to action.

I believe that the best way to advocate for our environment is by enabling others, to become informed citizens, as a result of expanding their understanding of the threats and challenges that earth’s delicate ecosystems are facing, and why these issues matter.

What are you looking forward to at Miss Earth United States?

I am looking forward to the public speaking portion of the pageant. This is my favorite aspect of the competition and I am excited to share what I have been working on with everyone!

What is something you can’t live without and why?

Downtime. In today’s society, it is easy to become consumed by our work or the things we want to accomplish; I think it’s important to find a work-life balance and to make time to relax or decompress each day.

A Force To Be Reckoned With: Q&A With Andreia Gibau Miss Earth United States 2017 By Natalie McGovern

Andreia Gibau of Massachusetts took the Miss Earth United States 2017 title on August 6th in Washington D.C., becoming the first African American woman to nab the title. Congratulations Andreia!

Natalie (N): You just got back from Chicago recently to meet with your official dress designer Mac Duggal for Miss Earth, what was that process like?

Andreia (A): I had such a wonderful experience at the Mac Duggal headquarters in Chicago. I got to work with Antoinette, Mac Duggal himself, and his daughter Ieena Duggal. They had picked out a ton of options of wardrobe for me to try on and choose the ones I wanted to bring with me to the Philippines. I will be fully prepared for every occasion at Miss Earth, thanks to Mac Duggal.

N: When do you leave for the Philippines and how long is the competition?

A: I leave for Manila, Philipines on October 6th, 2017 and the competition is 4 weeks long with finals taking place on November 4th.

N: What are you doing to prepare?

A: I am doing a lot of media preparation with Candiace Dillard of Candiace Dillard Pageant Consulting. I am also keeping up my healthy eating habits while working out 5-7 days a week. It is also a lot of mental preparation since I will be living in an entirely different country for 4 weeks. I’m getting to know myself more and learning even more about our environment and ways to combat climate change. I am also getting all my wardrobe together and designing my national and heroine costume with Pixton Design Group. I am really excited to have the best team - making sure I am ready to take home the crown.

N: You are the first African American woman to be crowned Miss Earth United States. What is your heritage and what has that experience been like?

A: I am incredibly honored to be the first black Miss Earth United States. I am full Cape Verdean, a group of 10 islands on the west coast of Africa and I also speak Portuguese, Spanish, and Cape Verdean creole. The experience has been so incredible, not will I be representing the USA but I will also be representing Cape Verdeans from around the world on an international stage.

N: What do you plan on doing with your title during your year of service?

A: My advocacy is “Think Global, Act Local” to encourage people to live in a way that does less harm to the environment around them. Educating and encouraging people to make the 5 R’s reduce, reuse, rethink, recycle, and respect as part of their lifestyle. I will be getting my hands dirty by planting trees and picking up trash. Education is really important to me so I will be going on my “Love Our Earth” school tour educating kids on climate change and what they can do to help. I want to create a world where our environment no longer needs protecting so I will support legislations that combat climate change and soak up as much information on more ways we as individuals can help.

N: What is a typical day in the life of Miss Earth United States like?

A: Days that I do not have an appearance I typically wake up at 6 or 7am and go straight to the gym. I have a to-do list for the day, and since I am less than 1 month away from leaving to the Philippines I spend the majority of my day in preparation mode. Throughout the day I am very aware of what I can do to reduce my carbon footprint and minimize my waste. I also log into my social media to interact with my fans throughout the day and answer messages.

N: Do you work or go to school?

A: I just graduated my B.S. in Public Relations. I work as a model full time and I run self-development workshops for kids on the weekends when my schedule permits. I've been signed with NY MMG for the past few months and I am also a Jovani Inhouse model.

N: If you don't take the Miss Earth title, what are your hopes? You could quite possibly make history again if you placed as an Elemental queen by being the first African American and Cape Verdean titleholder to hold those titles? ;)

A: If it's not the Miss Earth title I would still be more than happy to hold an elemental title. At the end of the day, I know that I would come back and there's still a job to be done in my home country. This title and job are a lot bigger than myself and I'll be serving my country no matter what.

N: Any foods or anything about the Filipino culture you are looking forward to trying?

A: I'm really big on fully experiencing someone else's culture. My entire life I have been around diversity and especially now living in NYC. I want to try balut, which is a popular Filipino delicacy. There's a restaurant in New York that has it on the menu but I'm waiting until I get to the Philippines!
Balut is a developing bird embryo (usually a duck) that is boiled and eaten from the shell. It originates and is commonly sold as street-food in the Philippines and it is extremely popular.

N: Do you think pageantry has become the catalyst to launching a modeling career?

A: Pageantry has become a catalyst to launch modeling and many other careers, which I think is so wonderful. The opportunity to get your name out there, build your brand, and constantly network with amazing people helps so much. Pageantry also builds character, integrity, and hard work so you're able to succeed in whatever career.

We think Andreia is going to slay Miss Earth finals and make the USA proud!

Best wishes competing in the Philippines!

Miss Earth United States 2016 Predictions: by Natalie McGovern

Miss Earth United States is 2 weeks away and we have our eye on a few beauties who are sure to stand out in the competition. Here are our Top 5 picks for Beauties With a Cause:
Florida- Mikhaila Leinbach has the look of a Miss Earth and of a national or even international queen. Her height, classic beauty and experience will take her far in the competition. A bonafide Disney princess, the stunning redhead is sure to turn heads with her passion for environmental causes such as reducing pollution. Undeniably beautiful she is an early favorite to win.

Louisiana: A former Miss Louisiana USA competitor Devin Boyd is a regal and elegant choice for the crown. Photogenic and seasoned, Devin is poised for a top 5 placement. Her platform centers around climate action and she is a promoter of the world environmental movement Earth Hour.
New Jersey: Lisa Green has a striking appearance, model height, and would do well at Miss Earth. Gorgeous, classy and philanthropic, she would be the perfect U.S. representative. She could place very close or take it all.

California- Trisha Bantigue is on fire, and by that we mean she is passionate about all earth related causes and would be the perfect spokesperson for the brand. A Filipino beauty who is both intelligent and confident, Trisha stands out to us as one who could take a dynamic lead in full force.
South Carolina-Mae-Ann Webb is not only a  southern pageant veteran but has a photogenic beauty that lands her in our Top 5 predictions. A fierce competitor and stand out, she advocates for recycling and going green, and is one of our top contenders for the crown.
We predict one of these girls will win Miss Earth United States and hopefully several of them will title as Elemental queens of Wind, Fire, and Water. We’ll have to wait and see to find out!
