A PageantLIVE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Today's American/International Executive Director Jera Lynn Anders

I always like to start with asking tell the readers about yourself.

Executive Director Jera Lynn Anders
With a background in music, modeling and the arts, it has been my lifelong dream of mine to mentor women of all ages, through pageantry. I have been in the beauty and pageant industry for over 30 years. I started out as a professional makeup artist for 18 years and later became involved as a pageant director for different pageant systems. I later then started my own pageants, Little Miss Glitz and Natural Little Miss. I am currently the CEO and Executive Director for Today’s American Woman and Today’s International Woman Pageants, which includes Today’s American/International Kid and Today’s American/International Man. Last year, we were voted the top Ms pageant of 2015 and now, recently named by Gala Latina one of the top five pageants in the world, which fills me with great joy because my hard work is paying off.

How is your pageant system different than the others pageants?

When I was a director for other pageants, I noticed a significant “gap” between different types of pageants. For example, if you were a Ms. and your friend was a Miss there were not many pageants for the two of you
The famous pajama party!
to compete in together because you were in different divisions.  The same went for petite and for special abilities, etc.  And definitely no pageant included the men and children in our lives. Everything was separate. I knew from that moment on I wanted to establish a system that was different to kick in those barriers causing segregation between contestants. I began TAW so every teen, miss, ms., mrs., etc., can compete in the same system ~ a pageant for everyone!  Because everyone deserves to wear a crown with a purpose! We have a special division for those with visible and invisible abilities, we have a men’s pageant and a kid’s ambassadorship program. This will be our very first year awarding academic scholarships for teen and miss divisions. And, we plan to expand that in the very near future.

In your vision who is a Today’s American Woman or a Today’s International Woman?
Every woman of today. Any age, size, ethnicity and ability ~ a pageant for everyone.  We are a melting pot of all different stages of life. From student to mom, business professional to CEO.  Each posses an individual quality to equal up to what women stand for, in today’s world. And ALL are welcome in our system.

The Sisterhood

Today's American Woman Queen of Queens

If someone is looking to compete in your system and there is no state competition what should they do?

At this time, we do not have state preliminaries. So, the process to become a contestant begins with a phone interview. You go to our website at www.todaysamericanwoman.com and view the information about us. Then, send a contact form so we can schedule a phone interview with you. Once we speak to you and we determine we are the perfect fit for both of us, you fill out our official application and send it in with your deposit and professional headshot. And, then you are an “official” Today’s American Woman/Today’s International Woman contestant! It goes UP from there!!

Tell us about your divisions and your areas of competition.

Our competition age begins at age 10 and up. Our oldest thus far, has been right at 90 years young! We have a petite division, a mainstream division and a curvy division. We also have a division for visible and invisible abilities called the elegant division.

Our areas of competition are, Interview, which is a 5-minute private panel interview with our judges. Glam wear competition, which is an after 6 outfit that makes you feel “red carpet worthy”. One that is an outfit of expression. No denim or swimsuits, however. And then, of course our evening wear competition. We have an awesome opening number production that is not judged. We also have optional competitions, such as talent, spokes model and top model competition, and a few others. They are all explained on the website at www.todaysamericanwoman.com

Are all the delegates required to have a platform?  What if I do not have a platform?

Yes. We are a platform-based pageant, focusing on community service and mentorship. If you do not have a platform, we will sit down with you and help you decide which one is best for you. We are always here to help you every step of the way.

Of course, we would like to know about your scoring!

Our scoring system is very specific on what we are looking for. Stage presence, poise and confidence. Smart and well spoken. We care about your heart, not your dress size!! So, physical fitness or physical appearance is not a factor on winning the crown. Beauty comes from within.

We are Today's American/International Women
I hear your national competition is will be something no one will want to miss!! Tell us all about it!!  Please tell us!!

PageantLIVE Red Carpet Award of the Week Tykeisha Finney Today's American Woman Elegant Miss

By Tykeisha Finney: I am a fun, intelligent, funny, smart and super friendly 19 years old. I live in Severn, Maryland with my parents Robert (Jr), Shellette, my older brother, sister in law and puppy. I love to go to church, play sports and go shopping. I also love to sing and dance. My goal is to make a difference in our world by ending bullying and spreading my message to be yourself never let go of your dreams...your beautiful inside and out! Never let anyone bully you!

I started high school at Fort Meade Senior High School. While attending,I was bullied by some kids. The bullies even call me some very mean names and the bullies even went so far as to throwing my lunch away and steal my property!? My mom was not happy and decided to do something about it. I joined a cool club called, Key club where bullying was not accepted. My high school life started to look up and I made a lot of friends.

Smart and Cool ~ Fort Meade Key Club
I have also enjoyed volunteering, so I began volunteering at a cool community service called Happy Helpers for the Homeless. There I was met the founder, Amber Coffman (she established Happy Helpers at age 10!!)!!

Tykeisha and Founder of Happy Helpers for the Homeless Amber Coffman

Amber once competed in pageants and I met so many pageant queens I told them about my story they told me I should be in a pageant. Pageantry is real cool sisterhood of caring and accepting young people where bullying is NOT okay. While volunteering, I met Paige Clark of Pageantlive. I became their biggest fan even was given the honorary title of Pageantlive princess for being such a devoted fan.

Tykeisha and Founder of PageantLIVE Paige Clark

Things were really going well for me and I was very happy until I was beat up in the girls bathroom, was chased down the hallway being called awful names. My senior year I was assaulted in front of everyone by being choked and sent to the hospital.

If you are a victim of bullying go to stopbullying.gov   There is help!!

Even though I was experience all the bullying in high school I continued to volunteer at Happy Helpers for the Homeless where I met Maryland's Governor Martin O'Malley! What an honor. I was awarded the Governors Volunteer service award, Presidential award for having many community service hours. And so many other awards and Aja Owens Humanitarian Award. Just like me , Aja was a volunteer at Happy Helpers for the Homeless than stopped before end of my senior year.

I had never competed in a pageant. I was invited to compete in today's American Woman National Pageant and after much thought decided to give it a try. I knew people in pageantry were fun, easy to get along with and that is where I wanted to be. I did the necessary admissions paperwork, but had not heard anything official form the pageant until!! I received a special graduation gift from the Today's American Women National Pageant in the mail. Everyone had kept it a secret from me that I being crowned Today's American Women National Teen Ambassador for Invisible and Visible Disability 2014!!!

Today's American Woman Elegant Miss

My whole life in 2014 was better wearing my crown and sash & representing my pageant system. And in year of 2015 in June I went on my very first plane ride that was fun I landed to south Carolina to my first pageant. I met so many awesome fabulous ladies there. I also met my amazing and beautiful Executive Director, Jera Lynn Anders! She's the one who inspired me to come join the Today's American Women National Pageant. She's a very sweet woman ever and I met Michelle Heston of Iowa; Rebekah Bowne Hughes of South Carolina; Amber Marie of Florida; Trinity Nicole Miller of Texas; Alexandra Faith Tyler of Texas and so many more wonderful people.

I have enjoyed myself at my first pageant it was awesome & amazing spending time with my mother & my sister queens and going fun places and being crowned your 2015 Today's American Woman National Elegant Miss. And also in a part of my pageant life ,I have also met Stephanie Mcgrane she visited me from Minnesota to take me out to lunch. I also volunteer at a nursing home with my mom also. Thank you!!

PageantLIVE's Red Carpet Award Goes to Miss Teen Galaxy Shoreham-By-Sea Ella Collins Godden from Brighton, England

Miss Teen Galaxy Shoreham-By-Sea

My name's Ella Collins-Godden and I'm a bubbly, fun and ambitious 15 (almost 16) year old! I live in Brighton, England with my parents, paternal nan, two brothers and five dogs. I'm homeschooled and spend a lot of my time singing, working on different showbiz jobs, training and playing guitar & piano. I promote a clean and positive lifestyle and participate in a lot of fundraising and am heavily involved in my community.
I had wanted to participate in pageants ever since I was 8 years old when I watched Toddler's & Tiaras, but they weren't overly popular in my country. When I was 10 years old I went from being homeschooled to joining my local primary school. When I joined secondary school at 11 years old, the bullying started. I competed in my first pageant March 3rd 2013, I didn't place but I loved every second of the experience. May 2013 I competed in my first glitz pageant and was hooked from that day!
I realized my passion for singing when I performed at a pageant for the talent contest. When I was 13 I attended an interview with London record label, BGM Records. The director is still following my career. I've released two charity singles over the last two years and am making my official musical debut this summer.
At the age of 14 I made the decision to leave school after enduring years of abuse at school and struggling with numerous mental health issues.
On February 6th this year, I'll be competing in the Miss Teen Galaxy UK pageant. My goal is to win Miss Teen Galaxy England so I can go to Florida to compete against the international contestants. I will be having a lot of support at the pageant as my mum and sponsors are coming along to cheer me on!

My main ambition in life is to become a multi grammy winning recording artist and to one day set up my own non-profit organization.

I believe that I am in this world to achieve world peace one cause at a time.

A PageantLIVE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with United States National Pageant Director Stephi Barton Williams

As stated on their website www.unitedstatesnationalpageants.com

"Under New Management! Ensuring the Traditional Vision of Miss United States was restored. This pageant season, Miss United States is sure to turn heads in every direction!"

PL: I know 2016 will be a great year for you and Miss United States National Pageant! Please tell our readers what is the traditional vision of the pageant?

S: Thank you so very much! I intend to restore the values and principles that the system was founded on. The primary goal of the Miss United States Pageant was always meant to provide a life-changing experience for vibrant young ladies and women across the country, In a positive perspective. We want to empower all delegates to become active participants in their communities while nurturing and promoting a cause meaningful to them.

The Miss United States Pageant is based on a solid commitment to uphold the standards of fairness and integrity. It prides itself in providing an avenue for each young woman to give a voice to those needing to be heard, lend a hand to those less fortunate, and be a compass for those daring to dream. At the local, state, and national level, the Miss United States Pageant gives women the opportunity to promote a platform of community service.

PL: Before we get into the interview, please provide our readers a little information on who Stephi is!

S: HaHa, Stephi is from the small but beautiful town of Haysi, VA nestled in the coalfields. I come from a family of Coal mine owners, operators and coal truck drivers but have always had a passion for beauty. I love all beautiful things and tend to find beauty in mostly everything I see. Watching pageants as a child I wanted to know more, so I studied nearly every pageant in the whole world and became familiar with the different brands and competitions.

National Director Stephi Barton Williams
My husband OJ and I have 4 beautiful children, 3 of which are girls. They competed briefly in pageants but again I wanted more. I directed my first small time pageant in 1999 and started my own local system in 2006. I began directing for the Miss United States Pageant as a Virginia, local preliminary director in 2007. In 2011 I became the State director for 3 States. I had such a passion for the vision and values of this system that I accepted the position of State Director for 3 States that I didn’t even live in. I had just accepted the position as the Director of Operations for the System when the National Director Position became available earlier in 2015, I was encouraged to apply. The application process was very detailed. I was one of 21 others who applied. I worked for nearly 24 hours straight preparing my resume, mission statement and business plan. I was determined that I was going to get the position. I was so thankful when the call came that I was selected for the position. I have been blessed and I know just what to do to make sure we make it to the top, where we belong.

PL: For all those people who are shopping for a pageant system, describe the typical delegate who would be interested in this system?

S: This system allows young women all over the country to interact and discuss their achievements in service and volunteerism. We promote the intellect, moral character, and personal engagement of our outstanding participants as they pursue success in achievement. We provide young ladies and women with a forum to promote self-esteem; compete for state and national titles; meet others with similar interests; and open doors to personal and financial opportunity. Our Mother pageant, Mrs. United States has earned a solid reputation for integrity and excellence and we wish to gain the same respect for all 7 of our other premier divisions. Annually we see beginners, pageant pro’s and those who were just curious in what the difference is between Miss United States and Miss USA. We are seeing an increase of ladies from the USA system and because our Miss Division is from 20-29, we gain much interest from the ladies that have aged out of other systems. Miss United States is truly the total package, equally as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.

Miss United States 2015 Summer Priester
PL: What are the divisions and the eligibility requirements for each division?

S: Wow, How exciting! We have 8 total divisions, beginning with the Mrs. Division, for Married ladies ages 21 & up, which is directed by Mrs. Rena’ Lantrip http://www.mrsunitedstates.com

I direct the other 7 divisions which are as follows:
Miss – 20-29 – Unmarried, Never Married, Never Given Birth
Teen – 16-19 – Unmarried, Never Married, Never Given Birth
Ms. Woman – Unmarried, May have previously been Married and/or Given Birth or Never Married and/or Given Birth
Ms. – 20-29 – Unmarried, Must have previously been Married and/or Given Birth
Jr. Teen – 13-15
Pre-Teen – 10-12
Little Miss – 8 & 9
Miss Teen United States Andreia Gibau

PL: What are the areas of competition and scoring?

S: All Divisions for ages 13 & up compete in Interview, Swimsuit, Evening Gown and On Stage Question, This may sound to most like any other national pageant but let me talk a moment about the difference. The Miss United States system scores 25% per competition for a total of 100%, Miss United States Title Holders are the total package.

Our Little Miss and Pre-Teen divisions for ages 8-12 compete in Sportswear, Evening Gown and On Stage Question and are scored 33% per competition. These two divisions are so important to our pageant family and allows us to “Grow our Own” so to speak.

Miss Pre-Teen United States Sara Alli-Searle
Little Miss United States Alexandra Kouretas

PL: To attend the National Pageant are all the delegates required to compete in a state competition? What should someone do if there is not yet a state pageant? Will the delegate still be eligible to participate in the national pageant?

Dreams do Come True
Ms United States 2015 Celine Pelofi
S:  Beginning late in 2015 with the acceptance of my position we began a major rebranding effort. Some States never had directors and we are in the process of interviewing directors. At this time it is possible to obtain a State title if you live in a State that does not have a director, in which you would represent your State at the National Competition in August.

Everyone is welcome to visit www.UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com, click on your division and find your State. If your State does not have a director you will be redirected to a form where you can begin the process to obtain the appointed title for your State. This appointed delegate will compete at the National Pageant.

PL: The National Pageant is returning to Las Vegas. Are you able to provide us with more details of the date, host hotel, etc.?

S: Oh yes, we are going home to Las Vegas where Ms. Isabella Ilacqua began this beautiful system 30 years ago. It is our 30 year anniversary and I am very happy to announce that competitions will be held July 30 - August 4 at The Palms Resort and Casino in Fabulous Las Vegas, NV.

The Palms, Las Vegas, NV

PL: What is the cost to participate in the state and national pageant?

S: Each State is different based on the demographics of the State. I would encourage all interested competitors to visit www.UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com find their State and contact the State Director for information. If there is no State Director they will be redirected to the National Office where all of their questions can be answered. The Miss United States system is one of the least expensive National competitions in the country but we offer an exceptional quality to our delegates.

PL: If our readers have questions, whom should they contact?

S: If ever in doubt they can visit www.UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com or email myself or a member of our National Staff.
  • Stephi Williams, National Director – Director@UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com
  • Stevie Knight, Director of Operations – Operations@UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com
  • Shana Teel-Purkey, Director of Marketing – Marketing@UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com

PL: Are you looking for state directors? Who should they contact?

S:  We are looking for State directors in a few States. Anyone interested should apply at www.UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com or email a bio directly to Operations@UnitedStatesNationalPageants.com

PL: In closing is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

S: The United States National Pageant system is devised of intelligent women of all walks of life, who knows what she wants in her career, family, and appearance. She maintains a strong sense of identity and embodies the true spirit of "complete and total beauty." This is such a beautiful system and I intend to give my 1000% to ensure that we find ourselves at the very top of the pageant charts.

PageantLIVE's Red Carpet Award of the Week goes to National American Miss Pre-Teen Shayla Montgomery

National American Miss Pre-Teen
by Shayla Montgomery
I am a fun, intelligent and super friendly 13 year old. I live in Portland, Oregon with my parents, Chris & Sheila and our two dogs. I love to go to church and play volleyball. My goal is to make a difference in our world by ending bullying and spreading my message to "Be Brave and Be Yourself"!
Around February of 2014, I received a postcard in the mail, it was an invitation to an open call for National American Miss. I remember my dad saying, "Shay, do you want to try pageants?" I wasn't interested. A few weeks later, my dad said "Shay they are having the open call this weekend for the pageant do you want to check it out?" I said sure. I remember my mom being totally against me getting involved, however, she went with me and my dad to the open call. I received a letter in the mail from my state director, Matt Leverton inviting me to the state competition. I didn't take it seriously and did not prepare for my very first pageant. I
had fun. I loved meeting girls and doing casual wear. I placed in photogenic and casual wear and was in the top 10. I was so upset that I didn't win. I know crazy for it being my first pageant and me not practicing. I said I would never do pageants again as we drove home. My parents told me that they were super proud of me and I remember my dad saying to me what do you expect you didn't take it seriously and you didn't practice. The next day I told my dad I am going to go back next year and win. I loved everything about NAM. I loved the staff and I loved the girls that I had build relationships with during the weekend. My dad went crazy and signed me up for several pageants to give me practice. All I could think about was getting back to National American Miss.
Over the next year, I practiced with my dad a lot. Some days I would get frustrated with him because I didn't want to practice. He would remind me of my goal and I would do what he was asking me to do. My dad found another person who could also coach me Netty McKenzie. I worked hard over the year. I won the High Point Queen at my very next pageant which was Regal Majesty. I then went on to another pageant system and not understanding how you compete at Nationals went up an age division to Jr Teen and won state! We thought if we won at state and I turned 13 that I would have to compete at Nationals as a junior teen so my dad wanted me to compete with girls in the next age division. We met Andrea Walters there and I had a few coaching sessions with her. I lived, ate and slept pageants the past year. I worked with all three coaches my dad, Chris Montgomery, Netty and Andrea. Right before state we purchased another dress and I love that the owner, Aaron of Simply Grand by Aaron Michaels says to me "you won state in a David's Bridal gown". Which is true. I laugh at that now. We didn't know anything about pageants let alone where to buy a dress.
My hard work paid off and I remember when I was on stage and they were calling the runner ups and it got down to who they were going to call to be the queen and seeing some amazing girls still standing out of the top 10 and thinking either I got the same place as I did last year which was top 10 or I am about to be queen. When they called my name as the Miss Oregon Pre-Teen tears filled my eyes. I was so excited to represent my state.
My mom obviously came to love NAM. She loved that they had an emphasis on volunteering, that there was not a swimsuit competition and that they believe girls need to dress age appropriately including no makeup in my division. She also loved that I was being able to express myself individually and developing my speaking. I went from being a shy girl last year into a girl who is confident and able to talk to anyone this year.
Winning state I knew I would be going to Nationals and my goal was to win nationals. NAM was all I talked about. I watched Bralyns video of being queen every night before I went to bed. I stopped playing volleyball so I could focus on NAM. Life revolved around volunteering and practicing for nationals. I spent countless hours practicing with my dad. In September, we found Greg Solomon and I began having interview coaching online every week. It was so tiring to be asked question after question after question for an hour straight. There were days I would say do I have to do interviewing today and would be reminded of my goal and gladly I would face-time my coach. Thankfully, I was able to work with Andrea the month before going to Nationals too as she helped me fine tune what I had wrote for my introduction and my spokes-model.
Arriving at Nationals I was excited. I did not feel anxious. I felt I was prepared. I just wanted to have fun and build life long friendships with girls from around the United States. I had a lot of fun touring Hollywood, going to Disneyland, spending Thanksgiving with my family and participating in casual wear and spokes-model as well.
I will never forget the moment I looked on the wall to see who made top 5 in optionals. When I saw my name listed for Spokes-model tears filled my eyes and I fell to the ground. My speech was a personal story in which I was very vulnerable. We were not sure if it was going to be age appropriate for NAM yet I made the decision that I wanted to share for nothing else than to possibly help another girl. We re-competed and then when they called out the runner ups and then said my name as the National Spokes-model I was elated.
The life long memory didn't end there. I continued bonding with some amazing girls and then it came to our finale. I was sad that the week was ending. I had a lot of fun doing our opening numbers. Top 10 was called and I was excited when they called my name. Next they called out the top 5. I began to cry. I was in shock and walking around crying with such joy. I was ecstatic that out of all the girls in our country I was in the top 5. I will never forget the next moments. It was down to Miss Nebraska and me. I reached to hug her and then we held hands. When they called first runner up Nebraska. All I could do was thank God. I held on tight to my crown (my crown fell at state and I didn't want it to happen again) as I walked around thanking the judges and looking out at all of my family who came to watch me from Oregon and all around California.

There have been many who have been against "pageants" and often times it is due to a lack of understanding and thinking it is like toddlers and tiaras. I love to get to explain to them what pageants are all about and that a part of my score comes from volunteer service and then the rest is from my interview score, formal wear and personal introduction. These are core skills that we all need to be successful in life whether it is public speaking or interviewing for a school or a job.
Being queen to me is more than just a crown and a sash to sit upon my shelf. Being queen means that I am a role model to other girls and I am a servant shed my light and love to my community. I strongly feel that if you bring a smile to others or help those in need that you are also bettering your own life. My favorite quote is kind words are short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless by Mother Theresa.
I plan to help spread the message of Continue to Find Kindness across the country to Stop the mean girl phenomenon and revolutionize kindness! Not only is this personally important to me as I was once a victim of bullying it also goes along with my career goal to become a psychologist for children!
