Spotlight on Fionnghuala O'Reilly, Miss Universe Ireland 2019

Fionnghuala O'Reilly, Miss Universe Ireland 2019

Claim to fame.

I have a few roles with NASA. I am a NASA Datanaut; the Datanauts program is one of NASA's open innovation Women in Data programs operating out of NASA headquarters. I also am a director for the NASA Space Apps Challenge, the world's largest annual hackathon.

Describe yourself in one word.

Sassy

What's your philanthropic mission in life?

Investing in education can drastically change children's lives. I wouldn't be here without the teachers and mentors who saw something in me and who gave back more than what was required of them. I raise funds for schools, volunteer to teach kids coding, and bring awareness to the need for more diversity in male-dominated industries like STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

My future philanthropic goals, including building out my efforts further to impact children's lives globally.

Name one place in Ireland that people don't know about, and why would you recommend to everyone?

The Malahide Swan Estuary. Hundreds of swans live there, and it's so beautiful to visit and see in person.

Your definition of women empowerment?

Women's empowerment, for me, means leading by example. I stay true to who I am by going after the things that are important to me regardless of the "no's" [you hear] along the way. Every woman should feel confident and encouraged to be themselves and to achieve their goals despite setbacks.

What is #confidentlybeautiful to you?

Confidently beautiful for me means being able to feel beautiful no matter what state I'm in. Recently, I shared a post on Instagram right after I woke up in the morning with my sleeping bonnet on and my Miss Universe Ireland crown on top. Every night I wear that bonnet to protect my hair, and even in moments like that, I feel beautiful.

What's your legacy?

My legacy will be called: the woman who dared. I aspire to be the very first person to walk on Mars. My heroes are Katherine Johnson and Mae Jamison, and I want to inspire others how they have inspired me. I want my journey to show that you can embrace your uniqueness and feel confident in pursuing whatever dream you have for yourself.

The purpose of your social media posts?

My social media is all about having fun first. I like to share my work, fun activities, fashion and beauty tips, and travel posts. I have a big family, and we are always traveling, so I use it to connect with them and others to share my daily life.
