Spotlight on Birta Abiba, Miss Universe Iceland 2019

Birta Abiba, Miss Universe Iceland 2019

Claim to fame.

Being the first biracial beauty queen/Miss Universe Iceland/ in my country. Raising awareness about the importance of diverse representation and the importance for young men and women to know they are much more than their outward appearances.

Describe yourself in one word.

Joyful.

What’s your philanthropic mission in life?

As an active volunteer with my nation’s Red Cross has taught me the importance of education and the importance for young children to have access to it. Since it is a right, not a privilege, I want to continue my volunteering and advocation for children’s right to access education. It is also close to my heart to continue with my social justice philanthropy. Educating and informing both children and adults about prejudice, discrimination, and the importance of diverse representation.

Name one place in Iceland that people don’t know about, and why would you recommend to everyone?

I would recommend everyone to visit the Westman Islands. The fifteen (15) jagged volcanic islands are located half an hour away from Landeyjarh√∂fn in the South of Iceland. The scenery is beautiful as fourteen (14) of the islands were born out of submarine volcanic eruptions 11,000 years ago. It is also where Iceland’s largest puffin colony is located.

Your definition of women empowerment?

Giving women an equal rights and opportunities, socially, economically, politically, and in all other walks of life. It is giving them the option of choice and enabling to be important members of our society.

What is #confidentlybeautiful to you?

For me, being #confidentlybeautiful is standing for something greater than your self and knowing that your voice and your actions have power. It is being able to realize that your most beautiful quality is your kindness, empathy, and generosity.

What’s your legacy?

I hope to be remembered by my advocacy, empathy, hard work, and the impact I made on other people’s lives.

The purpose of your social media posts?

I try to give glimpses of my life and to talk to my followers about the issues I find most important.
